- Description
- Venting is a common approach used in the protection of equipment and industrial plants against the flammable gas and combustible dust explosion destruction. The pressure rise in the venting duct could be higher than the pressure rise of the original explosion, the explosion consequences could therefore be more catastrophic. The presence of combustible dust in the gas explosion phase increases the complexity of the venting process. The aim of this experimental work is to investigate and provide more information on the long duct venting process of methane/coal dust explosions. The results from this work is also, compared with previous findings of methane/coal dust explosions in a confined space without venting. A 1 m3 explosion chamber was employed for this purpose. A 10 m length venting duct was fabricated and attached to the 1 m3 explosion chamber. Results indicate that the maximum pressure rise reading occurred at fuel concentrations of 9.5%methane and 50 g.m-3, coal dust. The maximum pressure rise reading occurred at concentrations of 5% methane and 100 g.m-3 coal dust without venting. A significant reduction in pressure rise up to 50% was observed when the venting duct was applied. Finally, the coal dust particles caused an extension of the flame travelling distance for methane concentrations close to the lower flammable limit.
